Marriage that turns nightmare

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

Cambodian women live in fear with no hope in sight
Fear of repercussions she hides her face

In 2018, Sopheap wed with much joy and anticipation of beginning a family with her partner. Shortly afterward, they welcomed a son. Nevertheless, within a few years, her marriage deteriorated into physical and mental abuse as her spouse became an alcoholic.

Her husband, who is an expert in creating rattan baskets from Kampong Chhnang province, inflicted physical and verbal abuse on her often. To protect herself and her son, she had to stay with relatives from time to time.

Sopheap expressed that she was close to the brink of insanity due to her depleted emotional state. She further mentioned that all this had been very tough, yet she had stayed strong for her son's benefit.

Follow-up interview with Sopheap at her sister's house in the province, the 43-year-old woman, who was thin and tearful, declared that if her partner continues to be violent and does not alter his behavior, she has no choice but to divorce him.

In Cambodia, cases similar to Sopheap's are not unheard of due to the prevalence of domestic abuse. Nevertheless, women wanting to escape a violent marriage face several issues including cultural and legal impediments, and the law provides them with little security, according to rights activists.

Activists in Cambodia have stated that in their society, which is dominated by men and is traditional, there is usually a culture of not speaking out and blaming the victims when it comes to physical and sexual violence against women and girls.
